About This Class

a note from the teacher, Kendal Au:

As mindful teachers & bodyworkers who have discovered some love &/or fascination with the human body (& the body-mind connection), we know that no human is the human we study in the anatomy books.  That guy is just an abstraction - a universal static human whose use is to give us a generalized map.  When we work with actual people, it's never like that!  The more we work with people, the more we see so much musculo-skeletal disorder and ailment in the average person & hear of so many doctors (rightfully) saying "go do Pilates for your core/back", that it starts to feel like THE WHOLE WORLD NEEDS PHYSICAL THERAPY!  And, actually, we kinda do.  But instead of calling it "Physical Therapy", let's call it a higher level awareness and knowledge of how to use our bodies in a healthy manner so as to avoid injury, recognize when injury has occurred (people truly lack consciousness here!), and to deal with it well when it does finally happen.

So, as movement instructors & bodyworkers, we have an opportunity and knowledge base to become THE PEOPLE'S EXPERTS! We have a population who is ready and willing to learn about their bodies and a way to spread the word which isn't the TV and will be actually useful!

Of course most of us spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars every year on continuing our education to play catch-up on the knowledge that we see we need everyday we work.  I've created this series, not based on how substantial I think my credentials are, but on the feeling of an urgent need in our community and a desire to share the knowledge I have!

If I could afford it, these would be donation based classes.  Alas, the economy hits me too, especially as I have spent at least a grand a year on my continued education.  So!  Come and benefit from what I've learned and share a bit of what you know too!

In case you're wondering what my creds are:

  • Certified BASI Comprehensive Teacher
  • 3-peated the Rehabilitation Intensive for Pilates Trainers with Liz Roman @ EHS (she uses the Janda method for body reading, and many methods from all over the world of body work for treatments)
  • Assessment & Care Techniques for Pilates Instructors with Marcelle Parry @ EHS (she's a chiropractor & Pilates Instructor, among other things - very sharp!)
  • Rehabbed from my acl replacement with Marcelle Parry (Whoa! Did I learn A LOT!)
  • NueroMuscular Reprogramming Certification - a manual therapy approach that uses body reading & muscle testing to address faulty patterns (including & esp. trauma induced ones) in the muscular system.
  • Anatomy Trains short course for Movement Therapists - body reading and applications with ground breaking anatomical perspective on fascia & connective tissue by Thomas Myers.  Extensive study of the Anatomy Trains book and videos.
  • experience working with the following injuries (that I can remember right now): bulging discs in lumbar & cervical spine, tons of knee stuff - meniscus, acl, lateral & medial ligament issues, etc., etc., scoliosis, rotator cuff issues, piriformis syndrome, SI joint pain, carpal tunnel and related wrist and shoulder issues, imbalances in the neck, fused vertebrae, foot deviations, ankle injuries, lower leg breaks, hip replacement recovery, osteoporosis of the hips and spine, hip compression, arthritis.
  • extensive work with elderly people.
  • Pre-Natal & Post Natal care, study & experience, including healing diastasis recti.
  • TRX Suspension Trainer

From the Ground Up: Insights & Applications for Common Issues in the Body

Prerequisite: Please know basic muscles & bones.  You may want to bring your favorite anatomy book for reference.

Saturdays 1:00 – 2:30 pm Dec. 3 - Feet & Ankles
Dec. 10 - Knees
Jan. 7 - Hips/Pelvis
Jan. 14 - Spine
Jan. 21 - Neck & Shoulder

Drop-ins Welcome! Tho you'll get more by attending all of them consecutively.

These workshops are open to any movement teacher or body worker, but I will be showing you the methods I'm most familiar with which often come from the Pilates world. They also come from Physical Therapy, Manual Therapy, and a bunch of other places whose origins are blurred in my mind.

Learn some applications for taking care of the body from the bottom to the top, using manual releases, stretching, exercises, and more. Learn what movements might be bad for certain injuries and why. We will address some common issues that afflict many people, such as bunions, plantar fasciitis, runner’s knee, piriformis syndrome, pelvic floor weakness, hip replacement issues, bulging discs, hyper lordosis, kyphosis, rotator cuff troubles, forward head, etc. Leave each workshop with tools to help keep your students and clients (and yourself!) healthy, happy and moving!
